TEU vs. FEU
(Ocean Freight Capacity Explained)

Executive Summary

The Quick Definition

TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit) and FEU (Forty-foot Equivalent Unit) are the global standards for measuring shipping container capacity. A TEU refers to a standard 20-foot shipping container. An FEU refers to a standard 40-foot shipping container. Because an FEU is exactly twice the length of a TEU, 1 FEU is mathematically equal to 2 TEUs when calculating vessel or port capacity.

Why the Global Supply Chain Uses TEUs

Before the standardization of shipping containers in the mid-20th century, freight was loaded onto ships in odd-sized boxes, barrels, and sacks. This made loading slow and capacity planning impossible.

Today, the TEU is the universal metric. When a shipping line announces a new "Mega-Vessel," they don't state its weight capacity in tonnes—they state it in TEUs. For example, the world's largest container ships can carry upwards of 24,000 TEUs. Ports also measure their annual throughput in TEUs (e.g., the Port of Felixstowe handles over 4 million TEUs a year).

If you are shipping a 40-foot container (1 FEU), it takes up the exact same slot space on a vessel as two 20-foot containers (2 TEUs).

How to Choose Between a TEU and an FEU

Choosing between booking a 20ft container or a 40ft container generally comes down to Volume vs. Weight.

  • Book a TEU (20ft) if your cargo is Heavy: TEUs are ideal for dense, heavy goods like machinery, metal parts, tiles, or canned goods. A 20ft container will often hit its maximum legal weight limit long before it runs out of physical space.
  • Book an FEU (40ft) if your cargo is Voluminous: FEUs are ideal for lighter, bulkier goods like clothing, furniture, toys, or electronics. You get twice the volume of a TEU, but not twice the weight capacity.

Capacity Comparison: TEU vs. FEU

Understanding exact internal dimensions is crucial for shippers looking to optimize their FCL (Full Container Load) shipments. Below are the standard capacities:

Metric TEU (Standard 20ft) FEU (Standard 40ft)
Internal Length ~ 5.90m (19.4 ft) ~ 12.03m (39.5 ft)
Cubic Capacity (CBM) Approx. 33 CBM Approx. 67 CBM
Standard UK Pallets (1.2m x 1m) 10 to 11 Pallets 23 to 24 Pallets
Euro Pallets (1.2m x 0.8m) 11 to 12 Pallets 24 to 25 Pallets
Best Cargo Type Dense / Heavy Cargo Bulky / Light Cargo

LCL vs. FCL Pricing

If your cargo volume is significantly less than 15 CBM, booking a full TEU might not be cost-effective. In this case, freight forwarders offer LCL (Less than Container Load) services, where they consolidate your pallets with other shippers into a single TEU or FEU to save you money.
